James Halsell was an Air Force Test Pilot when he was selected by NASA to become an Astronaut in 1990. He was a veteran of five flights totalling over 1,250 hours in space, pilot of two STS missions and commander of three. He also served as a manager for Shuttle Launch Integration and Space Shuttle Program manager. After the Columbia accident he led the NASA Return to Flight Planning team.
STS-74 was the fourth mission of the US/Russian Shuttle-Mir Program, and the second docking of the Space Shuttle with Mir. Space Shuttle Atlantis lifted off from Kennedy Space Center launch pad 39A on 12 November 1995. The mission ended 8 days later with the landing of Atlantis back at Kennedy. It was the second in a series of seven straight missions to the station flown by Atlantis.Low Earth Orbit
STS-101 was a Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station (ISS) flown by Space Shuttle Atlantis. The mission was a 10-day mission conducted between 19 May 2000 and 29 May 2000. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is an independent agency of the executive branch of the United States federal government responsible for the civilian space program, as well as aeronautics and aerospace research. NASA have many launch facilities but most are inactive. The most commonly used pad will be LC-39B at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
